Techniques to Improve Memory:

By: J. Wall

It doesn't have to be complicated to find techniques to improve memory. There are several safe and effective methods that can increase memory and boost cognitive function. The good news is that many of them are ones you can implement without large time commitments or huge amounts of effort.

Just as our bodies require exercise to stay healthy, so do our brains. However, exercising the brain is in many ways easier than physical exercise. What the brain needs is stimulation and simple memory techniques to stay strong. Sitting in front of the TV is not only not physically beneficial, but also doesn't help your brain. But unlike physical activity you don't have to get off the couch to help your brain.

Convert the TV time into reading a book, doing a word puzzle, or playing a game that requires strategy. Crossword puzzles, for example, are a short time investment that can provide a huge benefit in helping your brain stay healthy. Memorizing a poem or other work also forces the brain to strengthen its pathways.

Another improve memory technique that is simple is learn a new skill. Doing something new causes your brain to work and become stronger. Not only does your brain benefit from this, but you acquire a  new ability as well. A win-win.

Techniques to improve memory also encompass what we put in our bodies. We all know that we should eat healthy for our bodies, but the same is true for our minds. The brain is one of the organs in the body that consumes the largest amount of oxygen and energy. It therefore is one of the biggest winners when we provide our bodies with good nutrients. Eating foods like fish that are high in Omega 3 fatty acids, or grains and vegetables high in antioxidants and vitamins, go a long way toward helping our brains work at optimal efficiency.

A related technique to improve memory is using supplements to increase the nutrients that we provide our bodies. As the supplement marketplace matures, a number of manufacturers have produced products that are targeted to the brain and its needs.

Using herbs to enhance recall and improve cognitive function is perhaps one of the oldest techniques to improve memory out there. The use of herbs like Ginkgo Biloba and Ginseng to improve blood flow to the brain, improve mood and provide antioxidant protection, has been well documented. Any supplement used for your brain should include these at a minimum.

However, newer supplements now also include things like Huperzine A, which prevents the breakdown of neurotransmitters (the chemicals which allow nerves to function). They also give extra E and B complex vitamins to help the body efficiently provide energy, add in production of red blood cells and boost immune protection. The use of these can also be among the more powerful techniques to improve memory.

Whenever you consider supplements, you may want to consult with a medical professional that is well versed in herbs and natural remedies in order to ensure that what you take doesn't conflict with any medication you are taking. That said, supplements can be one of the safer and more effective of the techniques to improve memory out there. That combined with a mentally active lifestyle will help increase recall and strengthen the overall functioning of your brain.
