Speed Reading Tips

By: Study Tips Today

Tips for speed reading:

Set aside time every day to read something that you enjoy.

Check your progress by pacing yourself. Check your speed every 5 minutes by jotting down how many lines you have read. You should try to read 400 to 500 words per minute.

Do a comprehension check by asking yourself about what you have been reading.

Do interval exercises - Try speed reading 4 or 5 pages. Read them as quickly as possible. Then continue reading at your normal reading speed. If you do this over several days, you will find that your reading speed will increase over time.

Remember that paragraph structure can help you ready more quickly. As you read, find the main idea sentence in the paragraph, as well as supporting points and examples.

Introductory paragraphs and concluding paragraphs are generally the most important paragraphs.  Read them to check the key ideas.
